Teenagers are at a critical stage in their lives. The transition from being a child to maturing into an adult is always a challenging journey.
During this period of their lives they are going through vast hormonal changes, are experiencing pressure from their peers and the media, as well as many other external influences. These elements, combined with their need to find an identity, can make their life very confusing. Often teenagers become introspective and moody.
Some of the issues teenagers have to overcome include, but is not restricted to:
- Feeling lonely, depressed, insignificant, or inadequate
- Trouble communicating with others
- Feeling frustrated and angry often
- Feeling rejected by peers
- Struggling with life choices
- Lack of impulse control
Many parents struggle with these changes in their child, not knowing how to deal with their adolescent’s behaviour. They may need a new set of skills altogether.
Adolescent counselling offers a safe place for adolescents to be heard. Nothing they say can upset the counsellor, who also has the skills to not only help young clients explore their feelings, but also to identify possible trauma. Together, the adolescent and the counsellor will discuss possibilities, solutions and learn new skills.
As part of adolescent counselling, we also offer help to parents who feel overwhelmed in the form of counselling or parenting courses.
