Counselling: How Do You Choose the Right Counsellor
Counselling: How do you choose the right counsellor
Do not be afraid to ask for proof of qualifications. Often a good counsellor will belong to an association or their company will have a professional membership.
If possible speak to the counsellor who you will be seeing and get a feel for how you interact with them. You need to feel at ease and comfortable as you are going to be disclosing personal and private information.
A good counsellor will answer any questions that you may have regarding your visit.
Another important tip is to ensure that they have safe, private and appropriate premises. You do not want to be somewhere where your conversation can be heard or be in a room that doesn’t feel comfortable or there is a lot of noise outside. Things such as cleanliness and tidiness are also important.
Remember that you have rights. This means that if someone doesn’t ‘feel’ right with you, then you can be very polite and say either that you would prefer someone else (perhaps younger, older, male, female etc) or you can say that you will think about it and get back to them if you want to proceed. It is important that you don’t just agree and book an appointment and then not turn up.
